India’s premier investigative agency, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued an advisory regarding fake emails, threatening unsuspecting victims that the agency is probing their financial transactions.
The advisory was released on Ganesh Chaturthi day. It is common knowledge that conmen prefer to target their victims during festivals. The fake emails are in addition to the fake CBI officials.
Most of the fake emails state that the agency is probing their financial transactions rather than pure criminal offences and seek additional information. This causes panic amongst the recipients.
The most common IDs from which these deceptive & confusing e-mails have been sent in the recent past are:
CBI in its advisory has clearly said that Central Bureau of Investigation does not send such mails.
The best approach in case any such mails are received is to 01) not to respond to such mails 02) forward the mails to firstname.lastname@example.org
In case such mails are responded, than the fraudsters will lead the victims on a wild-goose chase, claiming that such details of such transactions will be kept secret. The fraudsters concentrate on two major weaknesses a) fear or b) greed.
