National Disaster Management Guidelines – RBI Notification

National Disaster Management Guidelines on Ensuring Disaster Resilient construction of Buildings and Infrastructure

With the surge in Natural Disasters and the consequent damage to Bank financed buildings, the need for a comprehensive guidelines, for minimizing the effect of disasters was felt.

Towards this end, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has formulated guidelines on ensuring disaster resilient construction of buildings and infrastructure financed through banks and other lending institutions

The committee set up by NDMA to formulate the guidelines had representatives from Indian Banks Associations too, as ultimately the Banks have to be comfortable with the guidelines.

As the guidelines are now ready, Reserve Bank of India, DBOD, issued a Notification –  RBI/2010-11/525

DBOD.Dir.BC.No.93 /08.12.14/ 2010-11, dt. May 12, 2011, advising banks to adopt the NDMA guidelines and suitably incorporate them as part of their loan policies, procedures and documentation.

NDMA : INDIA’S INSTITUTIONAL MECHANISM FOR EFFECTIVE DISASTER MANAGEMENT

NDMA was set up under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The Act itself was the outcome of a High-Powered Committee (HPC) set up in August 1999 and the need for a NDMA was reinforced by the 2001 Gujarat earthquake.
